China Urges EU to Refrain from Misusing Trade Remedies to Preserve Economic Ties

On Thursday, China urged the European Union (EU) to avoid the abuse of trade remedy measures, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding their overall economic and trade cooperation. The appeal comes amid increasing concerns over the EU’s recent trade actions targeting China.

He Yadong, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, expressed China’s apprehension over the EU’s initiation of 15 trade remedy investigations against China so far this year. Speaking at a press conference, He addressed the EU’s proposed anti-dumping duties on titanium dioxide originating from China, highlighting China’s hope that the EU will conduct these investigations in strict accordance with World Trade Organization (WTO) rules.

“China always advocates resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation,” He stated. “We do not want an escalation of trade frictions with the EU.”

He emphasized that China would closely monitor the EU’s subsequent actions and is prepared to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.

The ongoing trade tensions underscore the importance of maintaining open communication channels to prevent potential disruptions in the longstanding economic relationship between China and the EU.
