China has announced that it will impose countermeasures against 13 U.S. military companies and six senior corporate executives, starting December 5, in response to recent U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region, the Chinese Foreign Ministry declared on Thursday.
The U.S. decision to sell arms to the Taiwan region seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, severely interferes in China’s internal affairs, and undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to a statement from the ministry.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian elaborated on the countermeasures during a regular press conference, emphasizing that the Taiwan question lies at the core of China’s core interests.
“Pursuant to our anti-foreign sanctions law, China has decided to take countermeasures against the U.S. military companies and senior executives involved,” Lin stated.
Lin underscored that “Taiwan secessionists” and peace in the Taiwan Strait are as irreconcilable as fire and water. He asserted that the U.S. intention to support the “Taiwan secessionists'” agenda by arming Taiwan will not weaken China’s firm determination to oppose secessionist activities and achieve national reunification. Instead, it will push Taiwan into a perilous situation of war and conflict.
The spokesperson urged the U.S. to sincerely adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, particularly the provisions of the August 17 communique of 1982. He called on the U.S. to act on its leaders’ commitment to not supporting the “Taiwan secessionists'” agenda and to cease all arms sales to Taiwan immediately.
