Renowned Chinese romance writer Qiong Yao passed away in New Taipei City at the age of 86 on Wednesday. According to local police and fire department reports, she was found deceased at her residence after taking her own life.
Born as Chen Zhe in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, in 1938, Qiong Yao moved to Taiwan with her parents in 1949. Under her pen name, she began publishing a series of popular romance novels in the 1960s. Her works were later adapted into films and television dramas that captivated audiences on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
