Australia Experiences Record-Breaking Hottest Spring

Australia has witnessed its hottest spring on record, with national average temperatures soaring over two degrees Celsius above the long-term average, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to new data from the Bureau of Meteorology, the national mean temperature between the start of September and the end of November was 2.08 degrees Celsius above the baseline average recorded between 1961 and 1990. This surpasses the previous spring temperature record of 2.03 degrees above the long-term average set in 2020.

The Bureau’s findings are based on data collected from 112 weather stations across the country, with records dating back to 1910. The significant rise in temperatures indicates a concerning trend towards more extreme weather patterns.

“The spring of 2024 was at least one degree warmer on average than any spring in the 20th century,” the Bureau reported.

The record-breaking temperatures have had widespread effects, including increased bushfire risks, stress on agriculture, and challenges for urban infrastructure. Experts warn that without significant action to address climate change, such extreme weather events may become the new normal.
