China and Turkmenistan have pledged to strengthen their bilateral cooperation across various sectors, notably in trade, energy, and cultural exchanges. The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov on Saturday in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan Province.
Meredov was in China to attend the fifth China-Central Asia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, a significant platform for enhancing regional collaboration. During the meeting, Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of continuing the traditional friendship between the two nations. He highlighted the need to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests.
Wang Yi proposed exploring new avenues to expand all-around mutually beneficial cooperation, seeking breakthroughs in promoting energy collaboration, and advancing people-to-people exchanges. “China is willing to further expand the scale of trade and investment cooperation with Turkmenistan and will encourage more Chinese-funded enterprises to invest in Turkmenistan,” he stated.
Expressing Turkmenistan’s commitment to a permanent friendship with China, Meredov conveyed his country’s willingness to maintain close high-level exchanges and to fully utilize the role of the Turkmenistan-China Cooperation Committee. He emphasized the promotion of mutually beneficial cooperation, particularly in the flagship project of natural gas trade between the two countries.
The meeting underscored the shared interest of both nations in enhancing economic ties and cultural understanding. The deepening of cooperation is expected to bring about new developments in regional stability and prosperity, benefiting both countries and the broader Central Asian region.
