China’s Lijian-1 Y6 carrier rocket has successfully completed its final assembly test in Guangzhou, south China’s Guangdong Province, according to its developer CAS Space. The rocket is scheduled for launch in late December this year, carrying 11 satellites into orbit.
This milestone marks a significant advancement in China’s commercial space sector. The rocket utilized a self-developed initiator for the first time during the test, alongside other innovative products that effectively reduced operating costs and shortened the production cycle. These advancements are tailored for mass production of rockets and aim to support the regular operation of launch services.
A key component of the final assembly was the integration of a 3.35-meter diameter fairing. The fairing underwent riveting, closure, spraying, and was successfully delivered, demonstrating the efficiency of the new production processes.
The Lijian-1 series rockets have become a mainstay in China’s commercial space industry, known for their high success rate, reliability, and cost-effective performance. Over the course of five flight missions, this rocket series has launched a total of 57 satellites, contributing significantly to China’s growing presence in space exploration.
CAS Space, the developer of the Lijian-1 series, is a commercial spaceflight company established by the Institute of Mechanics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The company’s advancements reflect the rapid growth of China’s commercial space sector.
In 2023, China conducted 67 rocket launches, with 13 being private commercial rocket missions. Impressively, 12 of these commercial missions successfully sent rockets into orbit, highlighting the robust development of the industry.
In recognition of the sector’s importance, the Central Economic Work Conference in December 2023 listed the commercial space industry as a strategic emerging industry. This designation was echoed in the 2024 government work report delivered at this year’s Two Sessions, China’s annual sessions of its top legislature and political advisory body.
