Investigators from Germany and Spain are collaborating with Lithuanian authorities to uncover the cause of a tragic DHL plane crash in Vilnius, announced Laurynas Naujokaitis, director of Lithuanian Justice Ministry’s Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Division, on Monday.
“We have information that the German safety authority has appointed four investigators to carry out the safety investigation, and they are currently on their way to Lithuania,” Naujokaitis said, as cited by the Baltic News Service (BNS). “Spain has also decided to send two experts for the investigation,” he added, noting that they are also en route to Lithuania.
Naujokaitis emphasized that the probe will focus solely on aviation safety, anticipating that the comprehensive investigation could take at least a year. Given that the aircraft was manufactured in the United States, the U.S. aviation administration has also been notified of the incident.
The ill-fated Boeing 737-476(SF), owned by Spanish airline Swift Air and operating on behalf of German shipping company DHL, was flying from Leipzig, Germany, when it crashed into a residential building near Vilnius airport. The accident resulted in the death of a pilot and injuries to three others aboard.
The collaboration between Lithuanian, German, and Spanish investigators underscores the international effort to enhance aviation safety and prevent future tragedies.
