Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has emphasized the importance of deepening relations with China as the country prepares for the state visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping from November 14 to 17. In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun in Lima, President Boluarte shared insights on how China can contribute to Peru’s development and modernization.
Forging Stronger Bilateral Relations
Peru was among the first Latin American nations to establish diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China. Over the years, both countries have witnessed substantial growth in political mutual trust and cooperation across various sectors. President Boluarte highlighted the mutual benefits of this relationship, stating, “Our collaboration with China has been pivotal in advancing our national development goals. We look forward to enhancing this partnership for the prosperity of both our peoples.”
China’s Role in Peru’s Modernization
Discussing China’s contribution to Peru’s modernization, President Boluarte acknowledged the significant investments and technological support provided by Chinese enterprises. “China’s expertise in infrastructure and technology presents invaluable opportunities for Peru. Projects like the Chancay Port not only boost our economic growth but also position us as a strategic hub in the region,” she noted.
Inauguration of the Chancay Port
A key highlight of President Xi Jinping’s visit will be the inauguration of the China-built deep-water Chancay Port. This monumental project is set to enhance maritime connectivity between China and Latin America. The catchphrase “from Chancay to Shanghai” symbolizes the new maritime-land corridor that aims to facilitate trade and cultural exchange across the Pacific.
Building an Asia-Pacific Community with a Shared Future
President Boluarte expressed her vision for a more integrated Asia-Pacific region. “By fostering collaboration and understanding, we can build a community with a shared future. Peru is committed to working alongside China and other nations to start a new era in Asia-Pacific development,” she said.
31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting
During his visit, President Xi Jinping will also attend the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. President Boluarte highlighted the significance of this event, emphasizing that it provides a platform for dialogue and cooperation on economic policies and growth strategies among member economies.
Connecting the Great Inca Trail
The ambitious plans to link the Great Inca Trail with new trade routes underscore the commitment to deepening ties beyond economics. “This connection is not just about commerce; it’s about bridging cultures and histories. It opens avenues for tourism, education, and cultural exchange,” President Boluarte explained.
Looking Forward
As Peru and China prepare for this momentous visit, there is a shared optimism about the future of bilateral relations. President Boluarte concluded, “We stand at the cusp of a new chapter in our partnership with China. Together, we can achieve remarkable progress and contribute to the prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.”
