Death Toll from Super Typhoon Man-yi Rises to 9 in the Philippines

The Philippines is grappling with the aftermath of Super Typhoon Man-yi, which has claimed nine lives over the weekend, according to the country’s Department of National Defense on Wednesday.

Ariel Nepomuceno, Administrator of the Office of Civil Defense, stated that the number of fatalities could have been significantly higher if not for the government’s swift action in enforcing mandatory evacuations in disaster-prone areas before the typhoon struck.

“Super Typhoon Man-yi was at its height when it lashed the villages in Catanduanes,” Nepomuceno remarked. “The proactive measures taken ensured that more lives were not lost.”

The island province of Catanduanes, located in the Bicol region southeast of Manila, bore the brunt of the typhoon’s fury. Officials report that approximately 4,000 houses were damaged, with 500 completely destroyed.

Residents are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding their communities. Humanitarian aid and relief efforts are underway, but the extent of the devastation poses significant challenges.

The government’s disaster response teams continue to assess the damage and provide support to affected families.
