In a pivotal meeting held on Monday in Rio de Janeiro, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on China and India to steer their bilateral relations back to a stable and healthy path. Meeting with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Wang emphasized the shared interests of the two neighboring giants and the importance of renewing their partnership.
Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted that rejuvenating China-India relations aligns with the fundamental interests of both nations’ peoples, meets the expectations of Global South countries, and follows the rightful course of history.
“China and India, as two major developing countries and neighbors, have far more common interests than differences,” Wang stated. “We should regard each other’s development as an opportunity and join hands to achieve common development and revitalization.”
The Chinese foreign minister urged both sides to implement the important consensus reached by their leaders, respect each other’s core interests, enhance mutual trust through dialogue, and handle differences with sincerity. He called for practical measures to be taken promptly, including the resumption of direct flights, exchange of journalists, and visa facilitation to promote interaction and reduce suspicion.
Looking ahead to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India next year, Wang proposed planning commemorative activities and encouraging exchanges across all fields and levels to deepen mutual understanding and trust.
Wang also noted that both countries pursue a non-aligned foreign policy, adhere to multilateralism, and support the democratization of international relations. He suggested that China and India strengthen coordination in international affairs and promote greater development within frameworks like the BRICS mechanism and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
“By working together, we can safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and promote the process of world multipolarity,” Wang concluded.
