President Xi highlighted four points of “unchanged” regarding China’s stance on China-U.S. relations.
“China’s goal of a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relationship remains unchanged,” Xi stated. He emphasized China’s commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as foundational principles. “Our position of resolutely safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests remains unchanged,” he added, underscoring the importance of carrying forward the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.
Xi’s message conveyed China’s goodwill and its desire to work collaboratively with the United States. By clarifying these four points, he aimed to help Washington understand Beijing’s cooperative stance, its red lines, and paramount principles in bilateral ties.
Over the past four decades, despite various challenges, China-U.S. relations have remained generally stable. Under the leadership of the two presidents, dialogue and cooperation have been revitalized, with more than 20 communication mechanisms restored or established, leading to positive achievements in multiple areas.
The meeting between Xi and Biden is expected to pave the way for increased cooperation, particularly in addressing climate change. Both leaders have consistently acknowledged the need to combat global warming and environmental threats. During the meeting, President Biden expressed his intent to be a positive actor in protecting the climate.
The two presidents also discussed the crucial role of economic and trade ties between China and the United States. They agreed to maintain momentum in communication and strengthen macroeconomic policy coordination.
President Xi emphasized that “small yard, high fences” is not the approach a major country should adopt. “Only openness and sharing can advance the well-being of humanity,” he remarked, urging for a different message regarding tariffs. He pointed out that evidence shows tariffs are ineffective and called for progress in reducing them, even if in small steps.
Technology lies at the foundation of climate change initiatives and trade relations. President Xi recognized China’s commitment to advancements in solar panels and electric vehicles as examples of how climate, trade, and technology are interconnected.
