Slovak PM Robert Fico Strengthens Ties with China at Import Expo

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is forging stronger ties with China during his official visit to the Chinese mainland from October 31 to November 5. Attending the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, Fico leads the largest-ever Slovak business delegation, aiming to boost trade relations and attract investment.

“This trip is the ‘visit of the year for 2024’ for Slovakia,” Fico remarked, highlighting the significance of the visit in enhancing bilateral relations. The Slovak delegation’s participation in the CIIE underscores the country’s commitment to deepening economic cooperation with China, its largest trading partner outside the European Union.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun, Fico discussed a range of topics including China-Slovakia relations, cooperation between China and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, China-EU relations, and peace and stability in Europe, particularly Slovakia’s stance on the Ukraine crisis.

Fico expressed enthusiasm about the Chinese lithium battery manufacturer Gotion’s investment project in Slovakia. “It might seem like a small investment, but for Slovakia, it’s a €1.4 billion investment that will create 1,300 new jobs,” he said. The project signifies a significant boost to the Slovak economy and exemplifies the mutual benefits of closer economic ties with China.

Recently, Slovakia was among the five EU countries to oppose anti-subsidy tariffs on China-made electric vehicle imports, reflecting its strategic approach to fostering open trade and resisting protectionist measures. With bilateral relations elevated to a strategic partnership, Slovakia’s “turn to the East” strategy is poised to enhance collaboration across various sectors, benefiting both nations.

The discussions during Fico’s visit are expected to pave the way for increased investment, technological exchange, and strengthened cooperation in critical industries. As Slovakia navigates its role within the EU while expanding relations with China, the visit marks a significant step in promoting economic growth and regional stability.
