Former UN Official Highlights Youth’s Role in Sustainable Development at Hangzhou Forum

Youth play a pivotal role in achieving global sustainability, emphasized Erik Solheim, former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), during a forum on biodiversity and sustainability in Hangzhou City of east China’s Zhejiang Province on Monday.

Speaking at the event, Solheim noted that progress at the recent UN biodiversity conference, or COP16, which concluded in Colombia, was insufficient. He called on nations worldwide to intensify their efforts in protecting nature and preserving biodiversity. “We need to harness the energy and innovation of the younger generation to drive sustainable change,” he stated.

The former UN official also highlighted the upcoming UN climate change conference, or COP29, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan next week. He underscored the importance of this conference as a platform for developed countries to provide greater support to the world’s least developed nations, helping them adapt to the pressing challenges of climate change.

In an interview with CGTN, Solheim remarked, “Developed nations have a responsibility to lead by example and offer assistance to those most vulnerable to climate impacts. Collaboration and solidarity are key to achieving our shared sustainability goals.”

The forum in Hangzhou gathered experts, policymakers, and youth representatives to discuss strategies for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The discussions centered around empowering young people to contribute to environmental initiatives and fostering international cooperation.

As the world faces escalating environmental challenges, Solheim’s call to action serves as a reminder of the critical role that youth and international collaboration play in shaping a sustainable future.
