The Serbian government has declared November 2 a national day of mourning for the victims of a tragic roof collapse at the Novi Sad railway station on Friday.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad reported that 14 bodies have been recovered from the debris as rescue operations continue.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic addressed the nation on Friday evening, urging unity and accountability in the wake of the disaster. He called on citizens to support the affected families and expressed gratitude to the rescuers and workers who have been tirelessly involved in the efforts.
Earlier, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic described the incident as one of the darkest days in the city’s history and a tragedy for all of Serbia. He extended his condolences to the victims’ families and thanked everyone involved in the rescue operations.
Despite the structure being 60 years old, authorities are determined to identify those responsible for the incident, according to Vucevic.
The concrete platform roof collapsed in front of the railway station earlier on Friday. Three people were rescued and taken to the hospital; among them were two women who had been trapped under the rubble but managed to maintain contact with rescuers.
Emergency workers arrived promptly at the scene, with over 80 responders from multiple cities participating in the rescue efforts.
Initially, eight deaths were reported; however, as time progressed, rescuers discovered more bodies, bringing the death toll to 14.
Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic announced that a thorough investigation will commence following the rescue operation to determine the cause of the collapse.
