China Rejects EU’s Tariff Decision on Chinese Electric Vehicles

Beijing, China — China has expressed strong disapproval of the European Commission’s decision to impose additional tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), labeling the move as irrational and protectionist. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce made the remarks on Wednesday, emphasizing that China neither approves of nor accepts the EU’s ruling.

The spokesperson highlighted that China has consistently pointed out the flaws in the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EVs. According to the Ministry, the investigation is fraught with numerous non-compliance issues and disguises protectionism under the banner of ‘fair competition.’

In response to the EU’s decision, China has already filed an appeal with the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement mechanism. The spokesperson stated that China will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its enterprises.

Despite the tensions, the spokesperson noted that the EU remains open to continued discussions on price commitments for Chinese-made EVs. “China always advocates for the resolution of trade disputes through dialogue and consultation and has made the utmost efforts to this end,” the spokesperson said.

Currently, technical teams from both China and the EU are engaged in a new phase of consultations. China expressed hope that the European side will work constructively, adhering to principles of pragmatism and balance, and taking into account each other’s core concerns. The goal is to reach a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible to avoid an escalation of trade frictions.
