The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has announced it will completely cut off roads and railways connected to the Republic of Korea (ROK) beginning Wednesday. The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Pyongyang considers this a “self-defensive measure” in response to escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
In a statement, the Korean People’s Army (KPA) General Staff cited several factors contributing to the decision. These include daily military exercises conducted by the ROK near the DPRK’s southern border, the frequent presence of U.S. strategic nuclear assets in the region, and repeated discussions about the “end of the regime” in the DPRK.
“To this end, a project will be launched first on October 9 to completely cut off roads and railways connected to the Republic of Korea and fortify the relevant areas of our side with strong defense structures,” the KCNA report stated.
The KPA emphasized that the acute military situation on the peninsula necessitates stronger measures to effectively defend national security. The move underscores the deteriorating inter-Korean relations and heightens concerns over stability in the region.
