Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Strengthen Ties in Visits to Laos and Vietnam

Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to embark on a significant diplomatic journey to Laos and Vietnam, aiming to bolster regional cooperation and strengthen ties with neighboring countries. From October 9 to 12, Premier Li will attend the 27th China-ASEAN Summit, the 27th ASEAN Plus Three (APT) Summit, and the 19th East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Laos, according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.

At the invitation of Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, who currently chairs ASEAN, Premier Li’s participation underscores China’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Southeast Asian nations. Mao Ning highlighted that China looks forward to working with ASEAN and other regional partners to “build consensus, deepen mutual trust, strengthen cooperation, and inject new impetus into peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region and the world at large.”

Following his engagements in Laos, Premier Li will pay an official visit to Vietnam from October 12 to 14, at the invitation of Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. This marks Premier Li’s first official visit to both Laos and Vietnam since assuming office, signifying the importance China places on fostering strong relationships with its neighbors.

Mao emphasized the significance of these visits in promoting comprehensive strategic cooperation and advancing the building of a community with a shared future. The meetings are expected to address key issues ranging from economic collaboration to regional security, aligning with the interests of ASEAN member states and the broader East Asian community.

The upcoming summits and bilateral discussions come at a pivotal time for the region, as countries navigate the challenges of economic recovery post-pandemic and address pressing geopolitical concerns. Premier Li’s participation signals China’s proactive role in contributing to regional dialogue and development.
