Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the need for responsible development of artificial intelligence (AI) during the High-Level Meeting on International Cooperation on Capacity-building on Artificial Intelligence at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Wednesday. He cautioned against using AI as a tool to maintain hegemony, underscoring the importance of fairness and global collaboration in AI governance.
“AI should serve the good of the people,” Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stated at the meeting. “We must avoid the ill-use and abuse of AI technology.”
Wang highlighted China’s commitment to developing safe and controllable AI technologies that are supervised, traceable, and trustworthy. He stressed the necessity of keeping AI under human control, ensuring it benefits society without posing unintended risks.
He also pointed out China’s dedication to green and low-carbon AI development. By promoting the green transformation of AI, China aims to enable sustainable economic and social development.
Recognizing AI as both a significant opportunity and a global challenge, Wang Yi proposed several principles for global AI governance. Firstly, he called for a comprehensive and balanced approach to build an international framework for AI governance.
Secondly, Wang advocated for fostering an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory development environment. “It is essential to create an environment that is fair and beneficial to all,” he said.
Thirdly, he emphasized the importance of upholding multilateralism. Wang urged for equal participation and shared benefits among all countries in the development and governance of AI technologies.
Wang Yi’s remarks reflect China’s stance on promoting international cooperation in AI development, aiming to harness its potential responsibly while mitigating risks through collaborative efforts.
