Tuesday saw Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meet in New York to discuss strengthening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional issues.
During their meeting, Wang Yi emphasized China’s commitment to viewing its relationship with Iran from a strategic and long-term perspective. He reiterated China’s willingness to advance practical cooperation across various fields to support the development of both nations.
“China will continue to support Iran in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity, and national dignity,” said Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. “We oppose external interference in Iran’s internal affairs and the exertion of sanctions and pressure on the country.”
Wang highlighted that both China and Iran are committed to pursuing independent development paths and firmly upholding international fairness and justice. He suggested that the two countries should work together to protect the legitimate rights of developing nations, promote a multipolar world, and democratize international relations.
On the Israel-Palestine conflict, Wang stated that China will continue to uphold justice, pushing for a ceasefire and an end to the war. He added that China supports Iran, Saudi Arabia, and other regional countries in improving their relations, resolving regional security issues through unity and cooperation, and taking the Middle East’s destiny into their own hands.
“China also supports the unity of Arab and Islamic countries in voicing a stronger position and working towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East as soon as possible,” Wang Yi said.
President Pezeshkian expressed Iran’s firm adherence to the one-China principle and its commitment to developing friendly relations with China. “Iran is willing to actively participate in jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative and implement the comprehensive cooperation plan,” he stated.
He emphasized that in a changing world where some countries pursue unilateralism and hegemony, Iran and China should strengthen cooperation to address challenges and uphold multilateralism and international fairness.
“China has consistently played an important role in promoting world peace and regional security,” Pezeshkian said. “In light of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Middle East, Iran hopes that China will play an even greater role in promoting a ceasefire, ending the war, and alleviating the humanitarian crisis.”
The meeting underscores the growing strategic partnership between Iran and China, highlighting their shared commitment to regional stability and development.
