Super Typhoon Yagi: China’s Strongest Autumn Storm Since 1949

This autumn, the Chinese mainland has been significantly impacted by a series of powerful typhoons, with Super Typhoon Yagi being identified by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) as the strongest autumn typhoon to make landfall since 1949.

Yagi, the 11th typhoon of this year, maintained its super typhoon status for an impressive 64 hours, causing substantial damage across many regions, according to the CMA.

Following Yagi, Typhoon Bebinca, the 13th typhoon of the year, made landfall in Shanghai at approximately 7:30 a.m. on September 16. Shortly after, Typhoon Pulasan, the 14th typhoon of the year, struck east China’s Zhejiang Province at around 6:50 p.m. on September 19, as reported by relevant provincial authorities.

The maximum wind forces near the centers of Bebinca and Pulasan reached 42 and 25 meters per second respectively, bringing severe weather conditions and impacting millions of residents across the affected areas.

The frequency and intensity of these autumn typhoons underscore the importance of robust disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in mitigating the effects of natural disasters. Authorities and communities are working tirelessly to ensure safety and minimize damage.
