DPRK Bolsters Defense with New Ballistic and Cruise Missile Tests

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) conducted test launches of a new-type tactical ballistic missile and an improved strategic cruise missile on Wednesday, as part of efforts to enhance its military capabilities. The tests were guided by the country’s top leader, Kim Jong Un, who stressed the importance of bolstering self-defense, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Thursday.

The new tactical ballistic missile, designated Hwasongpho-11-Da-4.5, was tested to verify its accuracy over a medium range of 320 kilometers and to evaluate the explosive power of its 4.5-ton super-large conventional warhead, according to the KCNA.

Additionally, the DPRK test-fired an upgraded strategic cruise missile, aiming to improve its performance for combat use.

Kim Jong Un, who serves as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, oversaw the missile tests. He stated that the prevailing security situation makes it imperative for the country to strengthen its military capabilities for self-defense.

He emphasized the need to continue enhancing the nuclear force and to develop the strongest military technical capabilities. Kim highlighted the necessity of achieving an overwhelming offensive capability in the field of conventional weapons.
