In a significant move to bolster regional cooperation, Wang Yi, director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, held talks with India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Thursday. The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the BRICS high-ranking officials’ conference on security matters.
The discussions focused on recent progress in consultations over border issues between the two nations. Both sides acknowledged that stable China-India relations are fundamental to the long-term interests of their people and are crucial for regional peace and development.
Emphasizing the importance of mutual understanding and trust, China and India agreed to implement the consensus reached by their heads of state. They committed to maintaining continuous communication and creating favorable conditions to enhance bilateral ties.
Wang Yi, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted that in a turbulent world, China and India—as two ancient Oriental civilizations and emerging developing countries—should adhere to independence and choose unity and cooperation. He stressed the need for both nations to support each other’s development rather than undercutting one another.
Wang expressed hope that both sides would pragmatically handle their differences and find the right path to coexist, pushing the China-India relationship back on track for healthy, stable, and sustainable development.
Ajit Doval echoed these sentiments, stating that India and China should focus on their individual and shared development goals. He expressed his belief that the rapid progress of the 2.8 billion people in India and China will have a transformative impact on the world.
