HANOI — Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit Asia this year, has caused widespread devastation in northern Vietnam, claiming at least 24 lives and injuring 299 others, according to a government report released late on Sunday.
The storm made landfall on Vietnam’s northeastern coast on Saturday, bringing torrential rains and causing severe landslides and floods across several provinces. Authorities have warned residents of the potential for further flooding as heavy rains continue.
“The heavy rainfall and strong winds have led to significant loss of life and property,” a government official said. “We are continuing our rescue and relief efforts, but the situation remains critical in many areas.”
The provinces of Quang Ninh and Haiphong have been particularly hard hit, with power supplies and telecommunications severely disrupted. Many communities remain isolated as roads are blocked by debris and floodwaters.
Local emergency services are working around the clock to restore essential services and provide aid to affected residents. “Our priority is to reach those in isolated areas and ensure they have access to food, clean water, and medical assistance,” said a representative from Vietnam’s disaster response agency.
Authorities have mobilized military personnel to assist in search and rescue operations as forecasts predict continued adverse weather conditions. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to evacuate to higher ground.
Typhoon Yagi’s impact on the region underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events affecting Southeast Asia. Experts attribute this trend to climate change and emphasize the need for enhanced disaster preparedness and infrastructure resilience.
