In an effort to strengthen ties and chart a new course for collaborative development, the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) concluded on Thursday with the adoption of the Beijing Declaration. This landmark document sets the foundation for building an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.”

The summit, attended by heads of state, government officials, and business leaders from across the African continent and the Chinese mainland, also saw the adoption of the Beijing Action Plan for 2025-2027. This comprehensive plan outlines strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation in various sectors including trade, investment, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and technology.

Chinese President Xi Jinping addressed the gathering, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and mutual support. “China and Africa share a profound friendship rooted in our common struggles and aspirations,” he said. “The Beijing Declaration and Action Plan symbolize our commitment to work hand in hand for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.”

African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat highlighted the significance of the agreements. “This partnership is not just about economic growth but about uplifting the lives of our people,” he remarked. “Together, we will tackle the challenges of our time and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Key highlights of the Beijing Action Plan include:

  • Economic Cooperation: Boosting bilateral trade and encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in African industries, fostering job creation and technological transfer.
  • Infrastructure Development: Collaborating on major projects in transportation, energy, and telecommunications to enhance connectivity across the continent.
  • Healthcare and Education: Expanding programs to improve public health systems and increasing scholarships for African students to study in China.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Joint efforts to address climate change through green energy initiatives and sustainable agricultural practices.
  • Security and Peacekeeping: Strengthening cooperation in peacekeeping missions and promoting stability in conflict-affected regions.

The FOCAC summit serves as a pivotal platform for dialogue and cooperation between China and African nations. The adoption of these key documents signals a new chapter in China-Africa relations, aiming to create a resilient and thriving partnership that benefits both sides.

As the world navigates complex geopolitical landscapes and economic uncertainties, this enhanced cooperation is poised to contribute significantly to global development and prosperity.
