China and South Africa Elevate Ties to All-Round Strategic Partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday announced the elevation of their countries’ bilateral relationship to an all-round strategic cooperative partnership for the new era.

President Ramaphosa is currently in China for a state visit and to attend the upcoming 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which is set to begin on Wednesday and run until Friday.

During their meeting, President Xi emphasized that strengthening solidarity and cooperation between China and South Africa aligns with the common expectations of their peoples and supports the historical progression of the Global South’s growth. He called on both nations to lead their bilateral relationship forward with high-level strategic mutual trust.

President Xi stressed the importance of joint efforts to promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation. He highlighted opportunities to enhance collaboration in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and new energy sectors. Additionally, he encouraged strengthening exchanges and cooperation in human resources development.

Expressing China’s commitment to Africa, President Xi stated that China will open its doors wider to African countries. He affirmed that China stands ready to work with South Africa and other African nations to create new momentum for cooperation and to promote the high-quality development of China-Africa cooperation.

In the face of a complex international situation, President Xi underscored that Global South countries must uphold independence, strengthen unity and cooperation, and jointly safeguard international fairness and justice.

The elevation of China-South Africa ties marks a significant milestone in the partnership between the two nations. It sets a positive direction for future cooperation, fostering deeper connections and mutual growth within the context of the Global South.
