China and Djibouti Forge Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

In a significant move to strengthen ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh on Monday, announcing the elevation of their bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The meeting took place in Beijing during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

President Xi praised President Guelleh for his consistent participation in all FOCAC summits since its inception, highlighting the depth of collaboration between the two nations. “China and Djibouti have treated each other with sincerity over the past 45 years, engaging in mutually beneficial economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges,” Xi noted. “Our relationship sets a prime example for South-South cooperation.”

Emphasizing the shared goals of both countries, Xi expressed China’s readiness to work with Djibouti to leverage valuable experiences in exchanges and mutual learning. He underscored the importance of strengthening the bond of shared interests through win-win cooperation and building consensus for peaceful coexistence.

China committed to supporting Djibouti in operating key projects such as the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and the international free trade zone. Xi also highlighted plans to jointly operate Africa’s first Luban Workshop in Djibouti, aimed at cultivating high-quality talent essential for Djibouti’s economic development.

President Guelleh expressed gratitude for China’s valuable assistance in Djibouti’s economic growth and improvement of people’s livelihoods. “We are eager to work with China to advance important projects like the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway and deepen practical cooperation in various fields,” Guelleh remarked. He also pledged to enhance communication and collaboration with China to jointly promote regional security and development.

The elevation of ties between China and Djibouti signifies a deepening of strategic cooperation in political, economic, and cultural spheres, marking a new chapter in their bilateral relations.
