China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command has commenced joint live-fire exercises involving both army and air force units along the China-Myanmar border. The drills, which began on Tuesday, are taking place on the Chinese side of the border and are designed to enhance the PLA’s operational capabilities.
According to Tian Junli, spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command, the exercises aim to test the command’s reconnaissance, early warning systems, multi-dimensional control, and strike capabilities. “Our troops are prepared to handle various emergencies and are committed to safeguarding national sovereignty, border stability, and the safety of people’s lives and property,” Tian stated.
The live-fire drills underscore China’s focus on bolstering its defense readiness in border areas. The PLA Southern Theater Command is responsible for operations in the country’s southern regions, which include complex terrains and diverse security challenges.
The joint exercises reflect an integrated approach to modern warfare, emphasizing coordination between different military branches. By conducting these drills, the PLA aims to improve interoperability among its forces and ensure rapid response to potential threats or crises in the region.
The timing of the drills may also signal China’s strategic intentions to reinforce stability along its borders amidst regional security dynamics. Observers note that such exercises contribute to the PLA’s ongoing modernization efforts and enhance its ability to protect national interests.
