From Gold to Fatherhood: China’s Goalball Star Hu Mingyao’s Journey of Love and Determination

When Hu Mingyao helped China clinch gold in goalball at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province, in October 2023, he was on top of the world. But for Hu, the triumph extended beyond the court. Shortly after his victory, he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

On August 1, Hu embraced fatherhood with the birth of his baby girl. “It’s a quick change of identity,” Hu shared with China Media Group (CMG). “There were happy surprises, expectations, but also fears. My feelings were complicated.”

Despite the whirlwind of personal milestones, Hu remained committed to his sport. As a seasoned 29-year-old veteran, he has been training tirelessly in Hangzhou for the upcoming 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics. China is set to send a team of six male and six female athletes to compete in goalball in the French capital, and Hu is determined to lead his team to victory.

Goalball, a sport designed for athletes with visual impairments, requires players to rely entirely on their hearing and touch to track the ball. The rigorous training often leaves dedicated players like Hu with bruises from the impact of the ball during practice sessions. “There was very limited time I could spend with [my wife] because of what I do,” Hu said, acknowledging the sacrifices made in pursuit of excellence.

Throughout his preparation, Hu’s wife provided steadfast support, living near the training base and attending his practices daily. Her presence offered encouragement as he balanced the demands of elite sports and family life.

China secured silver in goalball at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, falling short of the top podium spot. Hu recognizes that their main competition in Paris will likely be defending champion Brazil. “Brazil are still our biggest opponents this time,” Hu told CMG. “They are the reigning Paralympic gold medalists and won the World Championships. We lost to them at both events.”

With unwavering determination, Hu aims to change the narrative at the upcoming Paralympics. His wife, when asked about her hopes for him, expressed a heartfelt wish: that he achieves his dreams and returns home safely.

Hu’s journey exemplifies the resilience and dedication of athletes who overcome personal and physical challenges. His story resonates with many across Asia and the world, highlighting the universal themes of love, courage, and the pursuit of excellence.
