The World Health Organization (WHO) reassured the global community on Tuesday that mpox, regardless of its strain, is not comparable to COVID-19 in terms of risk and spread. WHO officials emphasized that authorities are equipped to control the transmission of the virus.
“We can and must tackle mpox together,” stated Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, during a United Nations media briefing. “Will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or will we enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world.”
Mpox, a viral infection that leads to pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is typically mild but can be fatal in some cases. The clade 1b variant has raised global concern due to its ease of transmission through routine close contact.
Last week, a case of the clade 1b variant was confirmed in Sweden, linked to a growing outbreak in Africa. This marks the first indication of its spread beyond the African continent. The WHO declared the recent outbreak a public health emergency of international concern following the identification of the new variant.
Kluge highlighted that focusing on the new clade 1 strain will aid in combating the less severe clade 2 variant, which has been spreading globally since 2022. This focus will allow Europe and the world to enhance their response through improved health advice and surveillance.
Approximately 100 new cases of the clade 2 mpox strain are currently reported monthly in the European region, Kluge added.
Mpox transmits through close physical contact, including sexual contact. Unlike previous pandemics such as COVID-19, there is no evidence that it spreads easily through the air.
Tarik Jasarevic, WHO spokesperson, advised health authorities to remain vigilant and adaptable in case new, more transmissible clades emerge or if transmission routes change. However, there are currently no recommendations for the general public to wear masks.
