Seychelles President Wavel Ramkalawan has praised the deepening cooperation between his nation and the Chinese mainland, highlighting China’s significant contributions to the archipelago’s development ahead of the upcoming China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing.
In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun, President Ramkalawan reflected on the longstanding relationship since diplomatic ties were established on June 30, 1976. Over the decades, the Chinese mainland has played a pivotal role in diversifying Seychelles’ economy and building critical infrastructure, aiding the island nation in reducing its heavy reliance on tourism, which accounts for more than 70% of its GDP.
“Our friendship with China is based on mutual respect and genuine assistance without any strings attached,” President Ramkalawan remarked. “The Belt and Road Initiative has significantly improved the livelihoods of our people, bringing tangible benefits and fostering sustainable growth.”
He expressed appreciation for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global initiatives, stating that they “meet the world’s demands” by promoting peace, cooperation, and shared prosperity. “China’s approach to international relations is one that encourages collaboration and development, which is essential for small nations like ours,” he added.
The upcoming China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing is anticipated to further enhance partnerships across the continent. President Ramkalawan emphasized the importance of such platforms in addressing common challenges and exploring new opportunities for economic and social advancement.
“We look forward to engaging with our counterparts and the Chinese leadership to foster stronger ties that benefit all parties involved,” he said. “It’s through open dialogue and shared visions that we can achieve meaningful progress.”
The Seychelles, renowned for its idyllic beaches and vibrant multiculturalism, continues to seek avenues for growth beyond tourism. The collaboration with the Chinese mainland represents a strategic effort to bolster other sectors, ensuring long-term stability and prosperity for its residents.
As the world navigates complex economic landscapes, the strengthening of China-Seychelles relations signals a commitment to partnership and mutual growth, setting an example for international cooperation in the 21st century.
