Wang Lili, a veteran para rower from the Chinese mainland, is set to make a remarkable return to the international stage at the age of 42. As the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics approach, Wang is determined to showcase her enduring passion and impressive capabilities in the sport she loves.
Born in Dongyang, east China’s Zhejiang Province in 1982, Wang faced challenges early in life when she contracted polio at just 10 months old, resulting in a lower-body disability. Despite these obstacles, she led a fulfilling life, working as an accountant until the age of 28.
Wang’s journey into rowing began later than most, but her dedication quickly propelled her to the pinnacle of the sport. At the 2016 Rio Summer Paralympics, she competed in the women’s single sculls and mixed double sculls with partner Fei Tianming, earning silver medals in both events.
“Even though I grew up in an environment that helped me become a mentally healthy person, I always felt a sense of inferiority because of my disability,” Wang shared with China Media Group. “But after I started rowing, I realized that everybody is the same here, which helped me become more outgoing and confident.”
Para rowing demands exceptional power and endurance, with athletes pushing their limits during grueling training sessions, especially under the intense summer heat. Rowers tie themselves to their boats, and coaches remain nearby to ensure their safety, guarding against risks like dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
Despite the physical challenges, Wang finds joy and satisfaction in rowing. “I notice that I laugh more often since I started rowing, more than I used to when I stayed at home,” she reflected. This happiness fuels her commitment to the sport and her desire to continue competing at the highest level.
China will send a strong team to the 2024 Paris Summer Paralympics, with eight rowers and two coaches set to participate in three events: PR1 women’s single sculls, PR2 mixed double sculls, and PR3 mixed coxed fours.
As Wang prepares for her second Paralympic appearance, she hopes to inspire others with her perseverance and passion. “I want to show the world what Chinese rowers can do,” she said, looking ahead to the competition in Paris.
Wang Lili’s story is one of resilience and determination, embodying the spirit of athletes who overcome personal challenges to achieve greatness. Her journey to the 2024 Paris Paralympics promises to be an inspiring highlight of the Games.
