The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster in north China has taken a significant leap towards developing its low-altitude economy. On Saturday, in Tianjin Municipality, the cluster established the Low-Altitude Economy Industry Alliance, marking a new chapter in regional economic collaboration.
During the ceremony, 33 projects were officially signed, encompassing initiatives such as the construction of a low-temperature battery production line, development of supporting facilities, and the overall planning of a low-altitude public route within a science park. These projects aim to foster innovation and propel the region’s economic growth by leveraging the potential of low-altitude airspace.
Attendees from Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei Province witnessed a captivating drone show, showcasing various low-altitude application scenarios and highlighting the technological advancements in the sector.
Guo Kangwei, head of Baodi District in Tianjin, emphasized the importance of the low-altitude economy, stating, “The low-altitude economy is a typical representative of new quality productive forces, a new engine of economic growth, and a new track of industrial development.” Guo added that Baodi is vigorously promoting the deep integration of scientific and technological innovation with industrial development, accelerating the cultivation of industrial clusters related to the low-altitude economy.
The “low-altitude economy” refers to economic activities conducted in airspace typically below 1,000 meters, including flight operations, passenger transport, and cargo delivery. This sector is poised to become a significant contributor to China’s economic landscape.
In a 2024 report, the Chinese government identified the low-altitude economy as a new growth engine, recognizing vertical mobility as a “new productive force” in areas such as passenger and cargo transport. In 2023, the sector’s scale increased to 506 billion yuan (approximately $70 billion). China’s aviation regulator forecasts the industry will expand fourfold by 2030, reaching a value of 2 trillion yuan.
The establishment of the Low-Altitude Economy Industry Alliance is expected to enhance regional cooperation, foster innovation, and attract investment, positioning the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei city cluster as a leader in low-altitude economic development.
