In an ambitious stride towards a sustainable future, China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the nation’s top economic planner, unveiled a comprehensive plan to advance ecological conservation and promote green, low-carbon, and high-quality development.
Speaking at an event in Sanming, Fujian Province, to mark National Ecology Day, Zhao Chenxin, deputy head of the NDRC, emphasized China’s commitment to ecological reform. “We will actively and prudently work towards achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060,” Zhao stated. “Our efforts will focus on protecting the ecological environment and strengthening international cooperation in green and low-carbon development.”
The NDRC’s plan includes implementing fiscal, tax, financial, investment, and pricing policies to support green initiatives. Standards will be established to guide low-carbon development across various sectors. “We aim to refine mechanisms that realize the market value of ecosystem goods and services,” Zhao noted. “Advancing comprehensive compensation for ecological conservation and improving trans-regional compensation mechanisms are key components of our strategy.”
International collaboration stands as a cornerstone of China’s ecological agenda. The NDRC pledged to deepen cooperation in the circular economy and promote the export of advanced technologies, products, standards, and business models related to green and low-carbon development. “Actively participating in global climate governance is essential,” Zhao remarked. “We are committed to contributing to international efforts against climate change.”
National Ecology Day, designated on August 15 by China’s top legislature last year, aims to enhance public awareness and action toward ecological protection. The NDRC’s announcements on this day underscore the nation’s dedication to integrating environmental sustainability with economic progress.
As China navigates its path toward a greener future, these initiatives signal a significant shift in aligning economic growth with environmental responsibility. The emphasis on policy support, market mechanisms, and international cooperation reflects a holistic approach to tackling the pressing challenges of climate change and ecological degradation.
