August 15 marked the celebration of China’s second National Ecology Day, themed “promoting the comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development.” In recognition of this significant day, CGTN invited Sir John Key, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, to share his insights on China’s remarkable changes in green development.
Reflecting on his initial perceptions, Key admitted that before his first visit, his understanding of China was limited. “My vision of Asia was probably Singapore,” he remarked. Upon arriving in China, he encountered poorer cities and chaotic traffic, which shaped his early impressions.
However, over time, Key observed a substantial uptick in China’s development, particularly in infrastructure and urban modernization. He expressed admiration for the Chinese government’s efforts in promoting common prosperity across the country. “China’s overall development has far exceeded my expectations,” he noted.
During his recent trip, Key visited Linfen in Shanxi Province—a city that, twelve years ago, was one of the most polluted in the world. Witnessing its transformation firsthand, he was notably impressed. “Actually, I would move there. It was really nice, great economy, very green,” Key enthusiastically stated.
Key’s observations highlight the significant strides China has made in environmental protection and sustainable development, reinforcing the importance of National Ecology Day in promoting ecological awareness and green initiatives.
