Macao SAR Sets Chief Executive Election Date for October 13

The Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) has officially scheduled the election of its next chief executive for October 13, as announced in the Executive Order No. 40/2024 published on Monday.

According to Annex I of the Basic Law of the Macao SAR and the Chief Executive Election Law, candidates for the chief executive position must meet specific criteria. The candidate must be a Chinese citizen who is a permanent resident of the Macao SAR, at least 40 years old, and have resided in Macao for a continuous period of 20 years. Additionally, the candidate must support the Basic Law and be loyal to the People’s Republic of China and the Macao SAR.

The chief executive is elected by a broadly representative Chief Executive Election Committee and is subsequently appointed by the Central People’s Government. The term of office is five years, and the chief executive may serve a maximum of two consecutive terms.

This upcoming election is a pivotal moment for the Macao SAR, as the selection of the chief executive plays a crucial role in guiding the region’s political, economic, and social development. The election reflects Macao’s adherence to its governance principles and its ongoing integration within the broader framework of the People’s Republic of China.
