Shanghai is set to revolutionize its public transportation system by completely transitioning to new energy vehicles (NEVs) for buses and taxis by the end of 2027. According to the city’s latest work plan on transportation infrastructure and equipment, this ambitious initiative underscores Shanghai’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
From 2024 to 2027, Shanghai plans to replace over 9% of its total public buses and taxis with NEVs annually. This will introduce approximately 6,200 new energy buses and 11,000 NEV taxis during this period, significantly reducing emissions and promoting cleaner energy use across the city.
The city has pledged to phase out aging buses and vigorously develop various types of new energy buses, including pure electric models. Shanghai will also pilot fuel cell buses, ensuring all new and updated vehicles are equipped with the latest NEV technology. An average of about 1,550 new energy buses will be added each year as part of this transition.
In the taxi sector, all newly added or updated vehicles will, in principle, be required to be NEVs. An expected average of approximately 2,800 taxis will be updated annually, aligning with the city’s goals for a greener transportation network.
To support this massive shift, Shanghai will enhance the maintenance of bus batteries, strengthen battery performance requirements, and replace power batteries in buses timely. An estimated 500 sets of bus batteries will be updated annually to ensure reliability and efficiency in public transportation services.
This comprehensive plan highlights Shanghai’s dedication to environmental sustainability and positions the city as a leader in embracing new energy technologies. By fully integrating NEVs into its public transportation system, Shanghai sets a precedent for other urban centers aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and promote a cleaner, healthier environment for residents and visitors alike.
