Retired taekwondo legend Wu Jingyu has returned to the Olympic spotlight at the Paris 2024 Games, this time not as a competitor but as an inspiring figure cheering on Team China’s taekwondo athletes.
Attending the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Wu Jingyu shared her enthusiasm and support for China’s taekwondo team in an interview with CGTN Sports Scene’s Greg Laffradi.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist, Wu clinched victories at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games. Her illustrious career also boasts two World Taekwondo Championships and two Asian Games titles.
Since retiring in July 2021, Wu has continued to contribute to the sport. Invited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), she served as a torchbearer in the Olympic Village and a member of the competition supervisory board at Paris 2024.
“I will definitely be watching the taekwondo events,” Wu expressed, sending her heartfelt wishes to the Chinese athletes competing in Paris.
China has sent a formidable team of six athletes to the taekwondo events at the 2024 Paris Games. In the women’s competitions, Luo Zongshi (57kg), Guo Qing (49kg), Song Jie (67kg), and Zhou Zeqi (+67kg) will represent the nation.
On the men’s side, Liang Yushuai (68kg) and Song Zhaoxiang (+80kg) will vie for Olympic glory.
With Wu Jingyu’s support and the athletes’ dedication, Team China aims to make a significant impact in taekwondo at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
