PARIS — In a nail-biting finale at the 2024 Summer Olympics, 17-year-old Huang Yuting of China clinched the silver medal in the women’s 10-meter air rifle event on Monday, marking her second podium finish in Paris.
The intense competition between Huang and South Korea’s Ban Hyojin captivated spectators as both shooters ended the regulation 24 shots tied at a remarkable 251.8 points. Huang had maintained a steady lead through the initial 15 rounds, showcasing her precision and composure.
However, Ban surged ahead during the later stages, notably with an impressive 10.9 score on her 16th attempt, edging past Huang. Facing a 1.3-point deficit with only two rounds remaining, Huang demonstrated resilience, delivering shots of 10.3 and 10.5. Ban, meanwhile, faltered slightly with scores of 9.9 and 9.6.
The match culminated in a tense shoot-off, where Ban secured the gold with a 10.4, narrowly surpassing Huang’s 10.3. Switzerland’s Audrey Gogniat earned the bronze medal with a final score of 230.3 points.
This silver adds to Huang’s growing list of achievements. Earlier in the Games, on July 27, she teamed up with fellow teenager Sheng Lihao to secure the gold medal in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event, earning China its first gold of the Paris Olympics.
Huang’s performances have not only demonstrated her prowess but have also highlighted the rising talent in the Chinese mainland’s shooting sports. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this young athlete’s career will unfold in the coming years.
