Over the past decade, Asia has emerged as a pivotal player in the global energy landscape, hosting major energy forums across the continent. From Thailand and Malaysia to Japan and the Chinese mainland, these events have become key platforms for discussing energy security, climate change, and the transition to a low-carbon economy. This trend underscores Asia’s growing influence and commitment to shaping future energy dynamics.

Beginning on July 31, Beijing is set to host the three-day China Energy Summit and Exhibition 2024, bringing together experts from around the world. The summit will delve into critical topics such as the roles of hydrogen and ammonia in meeting energy demands, enhancing energy security, and exploring the prospects of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. These discussions are expected to have far-reaching implications for global energy policies and practices.

Energy initiatives have also been a focal point in recent political engagements. During the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, energy-related topics were prominently featured. A resolution adopted at the session emphasizes China’s dedication to ecological conservation and sustainable development. It states: “We must work to improve ecological conservation systems and make concerted efforts to cut carbon emissions, reduce pollution, pursue green development, and boost economic growth.”

China’s commitment to expanding global energy cooperation is evident in its focus on clean energy innovations, particularly green hydrogen. As the world’s second-largest economy, China is progressively becoming a technological leader in the green energy sector. This leadership not only drives energy transformation within Asia but also sets a precedent for low-carbon development worldwide.

The production of green hydrogen, a crucial clean energy source, is on the rise in China. Despite the global hydrogen industry still being in its infancy, China has positioned itself at the forefront of producing essential technology for green hydrogen. This advancement has attracted international cooperation, with Germany seeking to expand collaboration with Beijing in hydrogen technology and Malaysia partnering with China to develop its green hydrogen energy industry.

In a significant development, Malaysian company Semarak Renewable Energy and China Hydropower (Malaysia) Company, a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), have signed an agreement to develop Malaysia’s first large-scale green hydrogen production project utilizing floating photovoltaic power generation. Additionally, China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the world’s largest producer of methanol vehicles, plans to focus on Malaysia as a new market for its methanol-powered cars, which have lower fuel emission damages compared to diesel.

The global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is heavily reliant on Asia’s participation and innovation. China’s rapid adoption of clean energy underscores its role as a de facto leader in the green energy movement, influencing not only Asia but the entire world. The upcoming China Energy Summit and Exhibition 2024 is expected to further solidify China’s leadership by facilitating critical conversations that will shape the future of energy.
