Historic Floods Impact Millions in the Philippines: Locals Voice Struggles

Since July 11, the Philippines has been reeling under severe floods caused by Typhoon Gaemi, Typhoon Prapiroon, and the southwest monsoon. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on July 27 that over 3.36 million people have been affected.

As of July 26, Typhoon Gaemi has claimed at least 33 lives, with three people still missing. On July 24, Metro Manila officials declared a state of calamity in the capital region.

Bulacan province, one of the hardest-hit areas, witnessed unprecedented flooding. CGTN journalists visited the province to document the situation and speak with residents.

"I’ve lived here most of my life, and I’ve never seen a flood this severe," said one local resident. The extreme weather has disrupted daily life, with many struggling to find necessities and secure shelter.

Emergency services and volunteers are working tirelessly to assist those affected. However, the scale of the disaster has overwhelmed resources, prompting calls for additional aid and support.

The combination of typhoons and the southwest monsoon has exacerbated the situation, leading to widespread displacement and infrastructure damage. Officials urge residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders.

As the nation grapples with the aftermath, the resilience of the Filipino people shines through, with communities coming together to support one another during this challenging time.
