OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed leader in artificial intelligence (AI), announced on Thursday the launch of GPT-4o mini, a cost-efficient and less energy-intensive AI model intended to make cutting-edge AI technology more affordable and accessible to a broader clientele.
Designed to lower the barriers to AI adoption, GPT-4o mini is priced at 15 cents per million input tokens and 60 cents per million output tokens, making it more than 60 percent cheaper than its predecessor, GPT-3.5 Turbo.
This move comes as tech giants like Meta and Google accelerate their efforts to capture a larger share of the burgeoning AI market. By offering a more affordable and efficient model, OpenAI aims to empower developers and businesses, especially those with limited resources, to integrate AI capabilities into their operations.
Despite its smaller size, GPT-4o mini outperforms the GPT-4 model on chat preferences and has achieved an impressive 82 percent score on the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) benchmark. This benchmark assesses a model’s ability to understand and reason across a wide range of topics, indicating GPT-4o mini’s enhanced proficiency in language comprehension and practical application.
In comparison, GPT-4o mini surpasses the scores of Google’s Gemini Flash, which stood at 77.9 percent, and Anthropic’s Claude Haiku at 73.8 percent, according to OpenAI.
The introduction of smaller language models like GPT-4o mini is significant as they require less computational power, making them more accessible to companies and developers with limited resources. This democratization of AI technology is poised to spur innovation across various industries.
Currently, GPT-4o mini supports text and vision in its application programming interface (API), with plans to expand support to include text, image, video, and audio inputs and outputs in the future.
Starting Thursday, ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, and Team users will have access to GPT-4o mini, which possesses knowledge up to October 2023, replacing the GPT-3.5 Turbo. Enterprise users are set to gain access starting next week.
OpenAI’s latest offering reflects its commitment to making AI more accessible and affordable, potentially transforming how businesses and individuals utilize AI in everyday applications.
