China’s first national-level Crested Ibis Protection and Research Center has been approved and is set to begin construction this September in Hanzhong City, northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. This marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to protect and rehabilitate the endangered crested ibis species.
The center is a joint initiative between the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and Shaanxi Province. It will utilize the existing Shaanxi Hanzhong Crested Ibis National Nature Reserve, established in 2005, as its foundation. The aim is to significantly enhance the research and protection of the crested ibis through scientific studies, rescue operations, breeding programs, and the release of birds back into the wild.
By focusing on comprehensive conservation strategies, the center seeks to bolster the crested ibis population and preserve their natural habitats. The initiative highlights China’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection.
The establishment of the center is expected to foster collaboration among researchers, conservationists, and local communities, contributing to the sustainable future of the crested ibis and the ecological well-being of the region.
