China’s top legislator, Zhao Leji, has concluded an official goodwill visit to Russia, aiming to strengthen the already robust ties between the two nations. From July 9 to 13, Zhao, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), engaged in high-level discussions with Russian leaders, signaling a deepening of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership.
At the invitation of Viacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the Russian State Duma, and Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council, Zhao’s visit underscores the mutual commitment to enhancing political trust and practical cooperation. His itinerary included meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg and participation in the 9th meeting of the China-Russia Committee for Parliamentary Cooperation in Moscow.
During his meeting with President Putin, Zhao conveyed cordial greetings and good wishes from Chinese President Xi Jinping. He highlighted the significance of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Russia, noting that under the strategic guidance of their leaders, the partnership has reached new heights, delivering tangible benefits to both countries.
Zhao emphasized the NPC’s willingness to collaborate with the Russian Federal Assembly to implement strategic agreements reached by Xi and Putin. “Our legislative bodies play a crucial role in strengthening political mutual trust, deepening practical cooperation, and enhancing the friendship between our peoples,” Zhao stated.
President Putin asked Zhao to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi, recalling their recent fruitful meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana. He praised the strong cooperation between the Russian and Chinese legislative bodies, noting that it supports key bilateral priorities and fosters a favorable environment for economic, cultural, and legal progress.
Both leaders acknowledged the importance of the Russia-China Committee for Parliamentary Cooperation in promoting mutual learning and understanding. They expressed optimism that enhanced cooperation at the legislative and sub-national levels would further strengthen the enduring friendship between the two nations.
