Jalen Brunson Takes Pay Cut to Keep Knicks Competitive

In a significant move to strengthen the New York Knicks, All-Star guard Jalen Brunson has signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension with the team. According to his agent, Sam Rose of CAA, Brunson agreed to take as much as $113 million less than he was eligible for if he had waited to sign next year.

Brunson initially joined the Knicks on a four-year, $104 million deal in June 2022 and had two years remaining on his contract before opting for the extension. By accepting a smaller deal, he has enabled the Knicks to keep their payroll below the second-apron level of the salary cap, providing the team with more flexibility for future transactions.

The Knicks have been active in bolstering their roster, trading for Mikal Bridges by sending Bojan Bogdanovic and multiple unprotected first-round NBA Draft picks to the Brooklyn Nets in June. They also retained OG Anunoby on a five-year, $212.5 million deal, signaling their commitment to building a competitive team.

Brunson’s decision to take a pay cut showcases his dedication to the team’s success. By making this sacrifice, he is helping to create room for the Knicks to make additional moves aimed at enhancing their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
