China Boosts Flood Rescue Efforts with $118.9 Million in Additional Funds

China has allocated an additional 848 million yuan (approximately $118.9 million) to bolster flood rescue efforts across several regions, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) announced on Tuesday.

The funds, distributed by the MOF in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources, are designated to support local authorities in central, eastern, southern, southwestern, and northeastern regions severely impacted by recent floods. Provinces set to benefit include Hunan, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Guangdong.

Priority will be given to repairing water infrastructure and eliminating potential hazards, as the MOF emphasizes the importance of restoring normalcy and preventing future disasters.

Earlier this year, the MOF released funds in stages to assist local governments with disaster relief operations. The latest allocation underscores the central government’s commitment to supporting affected regions as they navigate the challenges posed by severe flooding.

Significant progress has been made in Hunan Province, where emergency response teams successfully sealed a breach in a dike at Dongting Lake—China’s second-largest freshwater lake—late on Monday. Efforts to drain flooded areas and mitigate risks continue, according to local authorities.

To further support rescue operations, the National Fire and Rescue Administration has dispatched 219 rescue workers along with 72 fire trucks and flood drainage vehicles to Hunan Province.

Residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities as recovery efforts proceed.
