Amis Musician Lailai Bridges Cross-Straits Heritage Through Music in Pingtan

For 7,000 years, the Keqiutou site in Pingtan, Fujian Province, has stood as a testament to the origins of the Austronesian language family. Drawn by this ancestral land, Lailai, a young Amis woman from central Taiwan, embarked on a journey to reconnect with her roots.

Settling in Pingtan, Lailai found inspiration in the shared heritage between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland. Through her original music, she weaves stories of cross-strait integration, touching the hearts of many who share a common dream of reunification.

“The Austronesian lineage links us across the waters,” Lailai said. “We are the children of this land, and music is my way of expressing that connection.”

The Keqiutou archaeological site has been instrumental in understanding the migration and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and the island of Taiwan. Lailai’s journey embodies this enduring connection, bridging past and present through her art.

Her songs have resonated with audiences on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, fostering a sense of unity and shared identity. “Through music, I hope to bring people closer and celebrate our common heritage,” she remarked.

As more individuals like Lailai explore their roots and contribute to cultural exchange, the bonds between the people of Taiwan and the Chinese mainland continue to strengthen, nurturing hopes for a harmonious future.
