Paolini Makes History as First Italian Woman to Reach Wimbledon Semifinals

In a remarkable display of skill and determination, seventh seed Jasmine Paolini blazed past American Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-1 on Tuesday, becoming the first Italian woman to reach the Wimbledon semifinals.

“It’s unbelievable, it’s amazing to get the win on this special court. I’m so happy to be in the semifinal,” a grinning Paolini said after her victory. “It’s a dream to be here in this position. I have to say today I played a really good match. She’s a really tough opponent; I lost to her three times in the last year, so it was tough.”

The 28-year-old Italian’s victory not only propels her into the semifinals but also surpasses the achievements of compatriots Camila Giorgi, Francesca Schiavone, Silvia Farina Elia, and Laura Golarsa, who all reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in the Open era.

Paolini took control of the match early, responding immediately after Navarro drew first blood with a forehand winner in the third game. The Italian ramped up the pressure with heavy exchanges from the baseline, pulling away for a 5-2 lead in the first set. She mixed up her play against the American to comfortably win her fifth straight game and take the first set swiftly on Centre Court.

Despite Navarro’s attempts to mount a comeback, including two break points in the third game of the second set, Paolini remained unshaken. “I was watching finals when I was a kid on this court,” Paolini reflected. “To be playing here now and reaching the semifinals is just incredible.”

Paolini’s next challenge is against experienced Croatian Donna Vekic, who earlier ended the fairytale run of New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win. Looking ahead to the semifinal, Paolini said, “In the semifinals, you have to play tough opponents, and she’s playing amazing. I hope to enjoy the next match, to give 100%, and I’m going to fight for every ball. I’m just so grateful to be here another time, in front of you guys.”
