Beijing, June 2023 — In an exclusive interview during her week-long state visit to China, Peruvian President Dina Boluarte highlighted the strengthening ties between Peru and China. Speaking with CMG’s Zou Yun, President Boluarte praised China’s advancements in technology, new energy vehicles, and high-speed rail systems.
“China’s technological innovations are impressive and offer valuable insights for Peru’s development,” Boluarte remarked. She emphasized the significance of the Chancay Port project, a flagship initiative under the Belt and Road Initiative. Located near Lima, the port is set to become a major trade hub connecting Latin America and Asia, popularly referred to as “Chancay to Shanghai.”
“The Chancay Port will not only transform Peru but also the Americas,” she stated. “It will serve as a new nexus for friendly economic and trade exchanges, fostering growth and prosperity across the region.”
Peru, one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic ties and a comprehensive strategic partnership with China, has been a major destination for Chinese investment. It was also the first in the region to sign a comprehensive free trade agreement with China.
Looking ahead to the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting to be hosted by Peru, President Boluarte expressed her eagerness to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping. She described President Xi as a “great and charismatic leader” who has dedicated himself passionately to China’s development. “His leadership and initiatives are crucial to global peace,” she added.
President Boluarte’s visit underscores the deepening relationship between Peru and China, emphasizing mutual cooperation in trade, investment, and cultural exchange. The developments signal a continued commitment to collaborative growth and a shared vision for the future.
