Tang Qianting Poised to Shine for China at Paris Olympics

In a year filled with remarkable achievements, Chinese swimmer Tang Qianting has emerged as a formidable force in the world of competitive swimming. At just 20 years old, Tang is gearing up to make a significant impact at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

Tang’s ascent began in February when she clinched her first world title at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. She secured gold in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke, finishing with an impressive time of 1:05.27. This victory not only marked a personal milestone but also set the stage for her subsequent record-breaking performances.

Just two months after her triumph in Doha, Tang shattered the Asian record twice at the Chinese National Swimming Championships in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province. She first broke the 1:05 barrier in the semifinals with a time of 1:04.68 and then surpassed her own record in the final with an astonishing 1:04.39. This time was a mere 0.26 seconds shy of the world record held by the USA’s Lilly King, making Tang the only swimmer this year to complete the event in under 1:05.

“The victory in Doha gave me more confidence and enabled me to perform better in Shenzhen,” Tang told China Media Group (CMG). “Doha was just the start and a great boost for me in self-confidence. I felt the changes in my mindset after winning the world title. I became hungrier for training and felt more motivated to work harder.”

Currently, Tang is training with the Chinese national swimming team in Shanghai, as they prepare behind closed doors for the upcoming Olympics. Her dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence have positioned her as a key athlete to watch in Paris, particularly in the women’s 100-meter breaststroke event.

“I’m willing to give my everything for the Olympics,” Tang expressed with determination. “It has always been my dream to win an Olympic gold medal since I began swimming as a child. It’s something I never stop looking forward to. Winning it is the pinnacle in this sport. I think I will enjoy my trip to Paris with a relaxed mindset. As long as I keep that state of mind, I can perform well.”

Tang’s journey is not just a personal quest for Olympic glory but also a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes across Asia. Her story of perseverance and ambition resonates with many who see her as a symbol of hope and excellence in the sporting arena.
