In a decisive 96-68 victory, Greece overcame Slovenia in the semifinals of the 2024 FIBA Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Piraeus, Greece, on Saturday. This win places Greece just one game away from their first Olympic appearance in 16 years, while simultaneously ending Slovenia’s hopes of advancing to Paris.
Thomas Walkup led Greece with 19 points and six rebounds, shooting 7-for-14 from the field. Nick Calathes, despite missing all five of his three-point attempts, orchestrated the offense with 11 assists for the hosts. Two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Giannis Antetokounmpo contributed 13 points and achieved a game-high plus/minus of +31, showcasing his significant impact on the court.
“Since coach Vassilis Spanoulis took this whole deal over, it’s been one goal and that’s to get to the Olympics,” Walkup shared after the game. “We’re one game away from it. We have to stay humble and focused.”
The Greek team displayed exceptional teamwork and defensive strength, limiting Slovenia’s scoring opportunities and demonstrating cohesion on both ends of the floor. With momentum on their side, Greece aims to secure their spot in the Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the national team and its supporters.
